It’s still a year a way and but the Gilas win against S. Korea, has secured the Philippine team a spot in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup that will be hosted by Spain. And I bet you’re wondering who are the teams/countries that will join the Philippines in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, right?
There will be a total of 24 teams included in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Two teams will automatically qualify for the tournament; Spain for being the host country, U.S.A. for winning the gold medal in the 2012 Olympics. The actual list won’t be completed until after 3 more FIBA Tournament (or continental championship); the FIBA Africa (3 teams), FIBA Americas (4 team) and the FIBA EuroBasket (6 teams).
There will be 3 teams from FIBA Asia that can qualify to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, the first two (2) spot for the FIBA Asia is already taken by Iran and Philippines, who will face in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship Finals later today,
while the last spot will awarded to the the winner of the S. Korea vs Chinese Taipei game, was awarded to Chinese Taipei.
There are also two (2) teams from FIBA Oceania namely Australia and New Zealand. There also 4 spots up for grabs in the Wild Cards, where “FIBA shall select four wild cards after all of the continental championships are done. FIBA is prohibited from selecting more than three teams from the same continental zone.”
So far here are the teams that already secured a spot in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup:
***17 more team will be named by the end of September 2013.
Competing in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup is a once in a lifetime experience for the Gilas Pilipinas and I’m sure this is something that they will treasure their whole basketball career if not their whole life.
